Subject: [*] MacAssem.hqx
MAS is a complete interactive system for assembly language programming. The
MAS system includes a full featured editor, file handling utilities, an
assembler, and an extensive runtime system with an excellent source level
debugger. Multifile search and replace is included along with routines to
dynamically maintain window lists. An on-line help facility includes a
description of most MC68020/30/40 instructions. The distribution package
includes the system, a complete User Manual to describe the features of MAS
and direct users through a series of hands-on tutorials. The package also
includes a listing of over 200 programs from "Assembly Language and Systems
Programming for the M68000 Family" by Ford and Topp, D.C. Heath, 1992. The
programs illustrate the MC68020/30/40 instructions and the use of assembly
language for extended arithmetic, character handling, system run time
environments, data structures, exception processing, interrupt handling,
concurrent programming, and coprocessor interface. Standalone and
interrupt-driven I/O libraries are included.
The assembler emits MC68020/30/40 code. Redefinable labels and include files
are added as enhancements. MAS provides an editable error window indexed by
line number. Options exist to generate listing files with cross referencing
and source/object information. Code execution is supported by a menu driven
run time environment. The interactive system features a source level
debugger.
The value of all 68000 registers and user selected labels are displayed at
each break. A memory display facility lists the contents in memory at any
label or absolute address. The runtime environment supports I/O redirection.
The system implements linking of separate source or object modules through
the Project Menu. MAS supports a full-featured help system. For code
generation with standalone systems, absolute addressing and S-records are
implemented.
This release is for demonstration purposes only. The self-extracting file
includes the MAS assembly system, and a set of tutorials that highlight its
main features. The software is fully functional, except that files may
not be saved or printed and access to the external clipboard is not
available.
The Help system only illustrates a sample of options and instructions.
Order information is included in the distribution.

Subject: !!!Help!!! with ScanShare
!!!Help!!! with ScanShare
I tried writing to Vladimir at Stalker Software for some help with the
ScanShare demo, and received no response. When I saw his recent posting
about the scripts for his LineShare product, I thought I'd send him and
everyone else out there these problems/questions I've had with ScanShare.
I can't get the ScanShare (1.2) demo to completely work for me. Let me
explain
my setup and what I'm trying to do:
A Mac II running System 7.0.1 + Tune-Up 1.1.1, 8 MB RAM. An Apple
OneScanner is attached to this Mac, with the Ofoto software residing in
a shared folder on this Mac. ScanShare is installed in the Extensions
folder.
A Mac IIcx running System 6.0.7 with 5 MB RAM. This person has an
account on the shared Mac II. They log on to the shared folder (with
the Ofoto software). Then they connect to the remote scanner using
ScanShare.
It takes almost a minute to open the Ofoto app. We quickly
tried to do an AutoScan. Result: the IIcx locked up and had to be
rebooted. We tried to repeat the process: log onto the shared folder,
connect to the scanner, launch Ofoto, and quickly tried to perform a
Pre-Scan. Result: a system bomb on the IIcx with a "coprocessor not
installed" message (the error dialog was flashing too, making it
impossible for us to click on the Restart button).
Some questions:
o Do you know what the problem might be?
o I've set up a remote password, but whenever I try to connect to the
remote scanner by selecting it, and choosing Options, I can either type
no password, the correct password, or an incorrect password and click
OK, and all it does is return me to the Chooser window. There's no
verification that you are connected to the scanner or not. At the very
least, there should be an error message when no password or an incorrect
password is entered.
o To your knowledge, does ScanShare work okay under System 7?
o Can I get a demo that works for longer than 1 minute? Or is disabled
in some other way (like being unable to save)? One minute is really an
inadequate time for any type of testing of your product.
o What is the shareware fee for ScanShare?
Please respond ASAP. We're trying to get this set up to be able to do
this relatively soon. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Subject: (A)Old MACs Keyboard replacement/fixing
This is a summary of the replies from the net about my query.
A few weeks ago I wrote to the net about a problem of (some) intermitten keys
on ane old keyboard (MAC 512E) with a phone-plug jack. The answers in general
suggested replacement with the Keytronics MacPro plus or the Datadesk 101E
keyboard.
I was able to fix the original Kb by squirting some WD-44 into the problem
switches. I wiped off the excess oil as best as I could with cotton swabs
around the metal structures attached to the PC board. So far, they work
perfectly. So being a cheapskate I will hold off buying a replacement for a
while.
Here are some pertinent details I received in the mail:
I replaced my Mac Plus keyboard about a year and a half ago with a
Keytronics MacPro plus keyboard. This excellent keyboard has
BOTH the RJ-11 (phone-plug) and ADB jacks, so it will migrate
with me to whatever machine I (eventually!) replace my 7 year old
plus with. It is basically an extended keyboard (15 function keys,
a control key, an esc key, keypad, cursor keys, and help/del/home/end/
pgUp/pgDn keys). Really it is a vast improvement. Especially since
I use unix (how did I ever do it without a control key and esc key?).
The layout is slightly different from Apple's extended keyboard,
I think better.
David S. Meyers (dmeyers@math.gatech.edu):
---------
The Datadesk 101E keyboard is an excellent extended replacement keyboard that
works with all Macs (ADB and the old telephone type connectors).
David Bosso (dave%humanitas@hub.ucsb.edu):
---------
I have repaired my Mac 128K keyboard by cannibalising a spare numeric keypad I
bought for cheap (about a dollar) at a computer 'dump'. It is not really easy
to
remove the keys, but it worked for me. I also tried taking individual keys
apart (they have lots of parts) and cleaning the metal switches. That only
helped
for a couple of weeks, though).
Reinder Verlinde (reinder@neuretp.biol.ruu.nl):
----------
I would recommend the Keytronics MacPro plus keyboard.
It's around $110 (check out ads in MacUser or MacWorld;
if you need a place, let me know). It is compatible
with all macs, including the ones with the phone jacks.

Thanks to all that answered. Hope this helps some other cheapskate.

There is no way of doing that on macintosh!
Concerning Mathematica I've found it to be very quick in background, as no
rendering is done!
As background time is shared between all background applications, it is very
important not to open more than mathematica, the second app for text editing,
and the finder. (the finder can be quitted also if most performance is
wished).
Maybe you should by a faster Mac, more menmory, or both! :-) Mathematica
always
needs plenty of it!!!

Hello!
Here at Mills we are switching a building of Macs from LocalTalk to
Ethernet and are struggling with the wide variety of methods for
providing laser printing for them.
To complicate the matter, we also have a few NeXTs and an SGI Crimson
on that Ethernet and would like to provide printing for them as well.
The final constraint is that we need to do this without replacing our
printers. Currently we have two LaserWriter Pluses and an HP IIIsi.
If anyone has experience setting up printing over Ethernet from Macs
and/or UNIX machines, whether the solution was hardware, software, or
both, I would greatly appreciate your advice. Please send mail to me

Subject: European Software (C)
Well, I though I might throw another log on the fire concerning the
recent discussion of the marketing of software in Europe.
I, like Elliot Bennet, am a transplanted American and I was a bit stunned
by the difference in prices between here and the US. Jussi-Pekka Mantere
made a good point that it costs a lot of money to translate the manauls
and other paper documents, but that does not explain why the English
versions of the software that I buy (some by choice and some because the
publisher does not have foreign language versions) is as expensive or,
sometimes, more expensive than the German one.
We have also experienced the lack of attention that the publishers seem
to have for European users. In the past several months, we have purchased
a number software packages including Word 5.0 (English), 4.0 (German),
Excel, Norton Utilities and some others. We have dutifully sent in all of
the registration cards and have yet to hear anything from any of them
about upgrades, etc.
Word 5.0 users in the US can upgrade for less than $20, I haven't seen
anything or heard anything about it here (if anyone else has, please let
me know).
Shortly after we installed Norton, I tried contacting (by fax) Symantec
about a problem we had. I sent the fax to the nearest European office
(The Netherlands) and still have received no reply (luckily I managed to
find the problem on my own).
Yes, there are added costs for U.S. companies doing business in Europe,
but, IMHO, the prices for the end users are too high and the level of
service is too low.

Make sure you have file sharing turned off before you try renaming the
hard drive. It makes sense that you can't rename a volume that people
might already be connected to.
If you still can't rename the volume, download from sumex:
info-mac/app/system7-unlock.hqx. Here's the blurb from
system7-unlock.hqx:
"Unlock Folder: System 7 required. This can help System 7 users who've
come across the "Name Locked Hard Drive" issue that occurs after having
a System 6 user log onto the System 7 File Sharing server. The symptoms
of this issue are that you cannot change the name of the hard drive even after
you've turned off the personal File Sharing. Additionally, you will unable to
paste a custom icon on that hard drive. This program has no
documentation, but simply select UNLOCK from the File menu and select
a folder or hard drive to have it make its magic upon."
Good luck!! :-)

Subject: Help with missing icons (Q)
I know it's been asked before, but since I didn't need it then, ... :-(
It had been literally years since I reformatted my disks and, feeling
virtuous,
I did it over New Years'. Environment: Mac II, OS 7.0.1/1.1.1 on the external
100 MB disk, OS 6.0.7 on the internal 40 MB. After using DiskFit Pro 1.1 to
dump the 100 MB to 130+ floppies, I used the vendor's formatting program
running from floppy and reformatted the external disk, then rebooted off the
internal disk (under 6.0.7) and used DiskFit to restore to the external disk.
As far as I know, all went well. (I don't have a lot of fancy icons on that
disk, so there could be icon problems I haven't noticed.)
Then I dumped the 40MB internal to floppies, used Apple's reformatter on it,
booted 7.0.1 on the external disk and used DiskFit Pro to restore to the 40
MB. All went well -- except that all the "neat icons" for the various games,
etc. have all reverted to bland "executable" icons. Can the old ones be
recovered?

Subject: IIvx can't run A/UX?
Yesterday I entered into some correspondence with someone after seeing
his posting on comp.sys.mac.system to the effect that the IIvx is not
A/UX-friendly. As we're in the process of buying a IIvx which we may
wish to run A/UX on in the very near future, I'm submitting (with
permission) excerpts from one of his messages, to see what the wider Digest
community makes of this. (Lines that start with ">" are mine.)
From: Mike_Cederholm@COM.Novell (Mike Cederholm)
> Maybe you could clarify just why the IIvx is so unsuitable for A/UX, in
> your opinion:
> (1) Video. Yes it basically has the LC video but why should that be a
problem?
May or may not be a problem, but since the LC will not support aux this may
be a reason...
> A/UX doesn't require fancy video surely.
Try to put a third party or apple card that is not supported by aux in a
a system like the IIci that will run aux with internal video and see what
happens.. The new APPLE 16" monitor is currently being bundled with an
E-Systems card (accellerated 8 bit controller) as an APPLE pruduct, and it
will not even work in the IIci which is a supported system for aux...
Being supported by apple is not equivalent to being supported by aux... even
for Apple products.
> (2) CD-ROM. When you say A/UX doesn't support CD300, why is that an issue?
> Surely you can switch a CD300 player back down to 150 - I mean, it's sort
> of backward compatible.
This issue is that while the cdrom will work in the backward compatible mode
to install aux, the drivers for the cdrom once aux is installed, are not
compatible.. remember you are no longer using the apple driver you are using
an aux driver... That means that backward compatibility may not be the issue
but rather the drivers forward compatibility...According to AUX support
hotline the new cdrom will work on the Quadra somewhat...no more said.. could
it just be a timing issue? who knows.
> (3) IIvx requires 7.1. Again, why is this an issue? I thought that
> basically you just get A/UX on a CD-ROM and copy it on to your hard disk.
You do not copy anything... the aux kernel (micro or mini kernel, to be
precise) in conjuction with the apple rom run installation scripts in a
psuedo apple finder environment to install unix... The operator only
selects the pieces to install. Without an operational unix kernel, you can
not recognize the file system structure on the cdrom in order to copy it.
This is one of those chicken or egg; which was first issues.. You cannot
recognize the aux partion without aux running, you cannot run aux without
loading the files from the aux partition on the cdrom... so you have to pull
some real trick maneuvering to get done.. When you do you usually restrict
yourself to a small set of "supported hardware" situations. The new
cdrom300 does not fit into the situation. Once unix is running on the mac
you have the new problem of a unix driver not recognizing or handling the
new cdrom correctly.
Hope this helps.. I have spend the last 6 weeks trying to get a IIvx to
run aux and then a IIci to run it with a 16" monitor... my conclusion:
Get one of the following systems if you want aux:
se/30 without any additional monitors
macIIci with 13" rgb monitor, or internally supported monitors
mac quadra with internally supported monitors
Do no use anything out of the ordinary if you do not want a high level
of frustration

option. I had heard that using an Imagewriter cable in this way might
damage the machines. is this danger real? how might it damage the macs?
would the printer cable be sufficient to allow 2 macs to share files under
system 7.1?
thanks for the help!

It may fill the bill for you.
What it won't do is read in or export a list of items which can be edited

But, you can call up a dialog box for Size and Position of objects and

By large I mean 10-30 meg Photoshop-type color files. He currently

If someone in a similar situation wanted to use Appletalk on the PC,

Subject: Please post as a troubleshooting question
Dear Moderators,
[ This is a question to fellow networkers (maybe a FAQ but I don't think so)
I would like you to post in the help or tips folder of info-mac.
The question has to do with *possibly* a malfunctionning keyboard.]
Hello,
This is a request for help on a problem I have never heard of before under
any circumstances. Bear with me for I don't even know whether the problem is
hardware or softwre related. My intuition is that it is not hardware but ...
I recently started to notice something peculiar on my monitor.
Somehow whichever screen window is active may suddendly start to
a) fill with a's as in "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaa..." if it is a window which will accept character input,
b) flicker insanely when it does not accept character input such as in a
pointing mode in Hypercard or drawing mode in Canvas or anything like it
etc...
Of course when I run NCSA Telnet as now to use VI on my mainframe this does
pose an enormous problem. Namely my vi files are all messed up. However if
I type faster than about half a character a minute (which is only sligthly
slower than what I can average ...) nothing happens.
The problem occurs when I have left the keyboard alone for say two minutes.
It stops as soon as I move the mouse or touch any key, including a non ASCII
key such as CR or ESC or DEL. The slightest mouse movement or any click will
immediately stop the problem. Then sure enough if I don't do anything else,
it starts again a minute or two later ! I have tried it with an extended
keyboard and with my own 81 key oldy. Makes absolutely no difference !
I also verified that all ADB cable were properly connected while the thing
was happening. Moving them slightly in their pin sockets did not do nit.
In fact disconnecting the keyboard entirely during the thing did not do
anything either, except for the flashing of the Num Lock,Caps Lock and
#3 LEDs on the extended keyboard.
Does anybody have any idea yet about the possible cause of this annoyance ?
Is it possible that the Unix computer or the server I am connected to via
Ethernet may in fact be sending the signals ? Since removing the keyboard
completely or replacing it with one that is known to be in perfect condition
does not modify the strange things I see, is it possible the handshaking
process constantly going on when I send and receive packets to it may go
bersek after a couple of minutes of inacivity on the ADB ports ? or what ?
I am stumped. Any suggestion will be grrrrrrrreatly appreciated. (that was
meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, not to worry)

Hello,
I recently upgraded my old mac II with an FDHD floppy and roms, this
apparently has caused some problems for me. Main, I can't enable

eventual crash. (Might take up to 40 minutes but if the cache is
enabled a crash will occur!). DayStar cannot find anything wrong

Since it took 3 months to get the FDHD kit initially, I am looking
for something quick and dirty:
Is is possible to copy ROM into RAM and not have the CPU access the
ROM address? I have lots of room ( 20 MB of real memory) and if
the cache did not cause a crash with the ROM installed in RAM

defective.

I need a word processor of sorts that will aid in writing
scripts. A friend is teaching a theater writing course this upcoming

a simple word processor that can automatically format things like slug
lines, action, dialogue, characters, etc. We heard of one program (now I've
forgotten the name, drat!) that does this, but as a commercial
application, it would cost about $250 per copy at the student rate, and
each student is going to need their own copy. So something of the shareware
flavor (or even inexpensive commercial software) would be far preferable.
Does such a program exist and where would I find it?
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

mea culpa, mea culpa.
I can assure you I was as shocked and chagrined (want to crawl under a

lines in the signature block. That was *not* what I saw on screen when
I pressed control-z otherwise I naturally would not have sent it. I
have been a regular reader (and sometimes contributor) to the digest
for the past three years and those who know me I'm sure were as
surprised as I was and probably chuckled wondering how the dickens I
fubbed up. I'll still wondering myself. I reopened my original letter
which was created in Vantage and on screen there's nothing wrong
(unless centering my name using tabs causes indigestion going through
our Vax mail output). I don't want to waste more bandwidth but the
reign of terror which my note incurred is in itself quite interesting.
I would suggest readers not to be too quick on the draw when someone
*apparently* screws up. A *brief* sampling:

Subject: System 7.1 Compatibility Revisited (Q)
If my memory were better I might not have to ask this. I apologize for that.
I did check the latest faq I have before sending this.
I do figure I'll probably get the best answers here.
I figured it would be a good idea to upgrade from system 6.0.7 to 7.1. Since
running the "before you install" program I'm not so sure!
It tells me that the following are incompatible.
Aldus Freehand 3.0
Aldus Installer 2.0.3
Pagemaker 4.0.1
WordPerfect 2.0.3
Adobe Illustrator Installer 3.2 (but not Illustrator itself)
Hypercard 2.0 (I have the part that came bundled with 6.0.7)
LapLink MAC III 3. (It says this is obsolete and may safely be
thrown in the trash. Does 7.1 include a
way to copy files from my pc?)
Interestingly, it likes ATM 2.0.3 just fine even though I just read here that
it doesn't work! (I did call for the $8 upgrade to 3.0 but have not installed
it yet.)
I also have a Suitcase 2.1.1 here that I have not yet installed. I
wasn't surprised the checker didn't like 1.1. But I wonder if 2.1.1
will work.
I seem to remember a flurry of discussion about all this when 7.0 first came
out. I also think I remember that the consensus was it wasn't necessary to
upgrade many programs that the checker did not like. But I'm really not sure
I remember right.
Anyway, that's my question. Do I have to upgrade all this stuff to go to 7.1?
I
will be very tempted to write off the $80 and forget the whole thing if that
is
the case. (I hate to say this but I have software written for MS DOS
1.0 and 2.0 that runs fine under 5.0 and even Windows 3.1 and OS/2.) I have a
pretty simple system here with few extras. The versions I have of the above
programs do everything I need to do for now.

Subject: Weather Images (R)
In v10:304 Stephano Pelli asked about obtaining weather images.
Several folks have responded with info about databases (which probably
is sufficient for most hobbists). Awhile back, I received some information
about a product(s) that may be of interest for the really hard-core, serious
weather enthusiast.
A company called Newcastle Computer Services Ltd. in England is world-wide
distributor for a product called MacSat. It includes software, receiver,
converter, and acquisition board (a some other miscellany) to allow one to
receive weather satellite (METEOSAT, GOES and others) images directly
with their Macintosh.
Their address is:
Newcastle Computer Services Ltd.
Belville House, Ponteland
Newcastle on Tyne, England NE20 9BD
Tel: (0661) 25515
FAX: (0661) 860069
Caveat:
- The info I have is old (at least a year)
- I know nothing about the product other than what I received in the
mail.
- It doesn't come cheap (but some of us have been known to spend a
great deal of money on what some may consider a frivolous pasttime
;-) ).
Have fun!

Actually, short branches can't be handled easily by GCC, because the
compiler doesn't normally keep track of the lengths of instructions;
instead, it has huge numbers of fprintf calls that build up the asm
text in a single pass. So although GCC supports many wonderful
features, shortening branch addresses is not one of them.
Fortunately, the MPW Asm has an amusing quirk, which is that it
reliably identifies short branches without being able to actually
generate them. So, Keith put together some code a year ago that
just collects the warning messages and bashes the asm code, then
reruns the assembler. You can keep rerunning until the assembler
no longer issues any warnings... Anyway, it's incorporated into
a new release of MPW GCC 1.37.1 that I've been preparing over the
past month, as an interim release until 2.x is available. Should
be ready any day now! (yeah yeah, promises promises :-) )

Thanks,
Contact dgr technologies of Austin, TX. 800-235-9748. Costs about
$20 for 2 cartridges, including shipping cost. I've been happy with
the cartridges. They even have colors.
